Exploring the boundaries of shared meaning

Certain Ambiguity

"Certain Ambiguity" is a conceptual photography project exploring the intricate relationship between language, perception, and visual representation. Completed between March 15th and May 15th, 2023, this collection of eight photographs challenges the conventional approach to image-making and titling.

The project began with the selection and publication of eight phrases:

  1. Under the Trees

  2. Moment of Clarity

  3. The End of The Road

  4. Blunt Lines

  5. Hopeless Abandon

  6. Aimless Obscurity

  7. Sculpted by Light

  8. Redundant Loop

These titles were published first, inverting the typical creative process. Over the subsequent 60 days, scenes were sought out and photographed to embody these pre-determined phrases.

This approach prompted reflection on the nature of language and visual interpretation. How does one visually represent abstract concepts like "hopeless abandon" or "moment of clarity"? What nuances emerge when considering "sculpted" versus "built" by light?

"Certain Ambiguity" invites viewers to confront their own interpretations of these phrases and their visual counterparts. It challenges the notion of shared meaning, suggesting that true understanding may lie in the space between words and images, in the mind of each individual viewer.

By presenting the final photographs alongside their predetermined titles, the project creates a dialogue between text and image, between intent and interpretation. It serves as a meditation on the limits of language, the subjectivity of visual perception, and the beautiful uncertainty that resides in the intersection of the two.
